Moon Hooch are an interesting bunch. Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, the group is a trio consisting of Mike Wilbur and Wenzl McGowen on saxophone and James Muschler on drums. Previously all students at the New School for Jazz, the guys draw upon that influence heavily and translate it into a danceable fusion of electronic music and rock n’ roll (it may sound crazy, but see our video of their performance of “Contrabass Dubstep” for a prime example). Their tunes are mostly high-energy and utilize electronic-style builds and drops to emphasize their wailing jazz soloing. The charisma of the group is admirable, especially the fact that Muschler was able to give such a wild performance at our venue despite being ill with a fever. Their debut, self-titled album was released in 2013, followed by This Is Cave Music in 2014. Catch our recording of their full live set at Signal Kitchen and hear something like you’ve never heard before.
