Maryse Smith captures glimpses of moments. With precise melodies and a direct, minimalist style, her songs are sketches of human relationships. A haunting voice and abstract instrumentation create music both peaceful and melancholy. Beautiful soundscapes unite with thoughtful observations to lead the listener inward, to encounter truths about one’s own past, present, and point of view.
Her new record, “The Way It Is”, is due out in spring of 2015. Subtle use of upright bass, pedal steel, percussion and prepared guitar creates an ethereal topography around acoustic guitar and voice. The album was recorded and produced by Michael Chorney. Smith resides and crystallizes pieces of time in Burlington, VT.
