Songwriter Ellis Ludwig-Leone’s 8-piece ensemble, better known as San Fermin, will join us at Signal Kitchen to share music from their recently released sophomore album titled Jackrabbit. The flavor of the work is difficult to pin down, evolving over the course of the album and often even mid-song, exploring unexpected yet charmingly ineluctable musical avenues, creatively circling the traditional techniques of baroque pop while flirting with folk and modern pop alike. Joining San Fermin will be Vermont’s own Sam Amidon. A prolific multi-instrumentalist, Amidon employs his talents on vocals, guitar, fiddle, and the banjo as he takes the world of folk music to authentic yet often delightfully unorthodox territories. Amidon’s latest album, Lily-O, is the sixth studio release in his catalogue and confidently expresses the maturity of his music. Favoring a collage-style writing process, Amidon’s selection of lyrics to accompany the beautifully haunting instrumental performances on the album gives a peek into the past, present, and future of folk music.

Sam Amidon

Sam Amidon thought he had a pretty good idea what direction his new album Lily-O was going to go. Then he started recording it. Out now via Nonesuch Records, what turned out to be a collection of distinctive, enveloping songs rooted in folk music didn’t begin that way at all.
