Since 2009, Brooklyn, NY’s Small Black have been delivering nostalgia-soaked tunes somewhere on (or more likely, parallel to) the chillwave spectrum of music. Although their sound is reminiscent of another time and place, it’s markedly not reminiscent of the recent surge of bands reminiscing about the same era. Their collective energy and group dynamic feel more natural and authentic than many of their counterparts—there is no retro kitsch here, despite the apparent heavy musical influences from early 80s rock and electro-pop. The path that Small Black follows feels more like an evolution than a throwback. It keeps the spirit alive in a fresh, modern package that is presented with care, attention to detail, and a true artistic sense of aesthetic and emotion. To get a better idea of the aforementioned influences, check out the band’s custom Spotify playlist and our interview with Josh Kolenik in the 4th edition of our Recipes series. The guys recently released their third studio album, Best Blues, via Jagjaguwar on Oct 16th of this year.
